Commander of 77th Brigade Inspects Troops in Masagawaa, Galgaduud Region

MASAGAWAA — The Commander of the 77th Brigade of the Somali National Army, Colonel Maslax Mahmoud Mohamed, has arrived in the Masagawaa area of the Galgaduud region, where he conducted an inspection of troop conditions and ongoing operations in the area.

The Commander visited the bases and positions held by the 77th Brigade in Masagawaa and surrounding areas, observing the condition of the forces and the progress of their work. He also received briefings from officers and unit commanders operating in the area, who reported on the security situation, military operations, and services provided to communities in eastern Galgaduud.

The inspection focused on assessing troop conditions, monitoring ongoing operations, and verifying the readiness of forces to fulfil their security duties and conduct operations against Al-Shabaab.

Strategic Importance of Masagawaa

Masagawaa has been a location of strategic significance in the fight against Al-Shabaab in central Somalia. In November 2024, federal forces thwarted an Al-Shabaab attack in the area, with Lieutenant Colonel Mohamed Ereg of the 77th Brigade reporting that numerous militants were killed and their combat vehicles destroyed. The troops, forewarned of the incoming attack, launched a counteroffensive on the positions from which the militants were preparing to stage their assault.

In July 2026, the Commander of the Somali Police Force, Major General Asad Osman Abdullahi, laid the foundation stone for a new police station in the Masagawaa area of the Galcad district, a project aimed at improving security and justice services for local communities. The ceremony was attended by officials including Member of Parliament Cabdirisaaq Aadan Warsame and the Chairman of the Masagawaa community, Ismail Abdullahi Hussein.

The new police station is expected to address the long-standing need for formal law enforcement services in the area and remove obstacles related to access to justice and security that the community has faced.

Ongoing Security Operations in Galgaduud

The Galgaduud region has been a focal point of military operations against Al-Shabaab. In January 2026, a high-ranking Al-Shabaab commander, Abdirahman Talxo Shuuke, surrendered to Galmudug regional forces, handing over his AK-47 rifle and ammunition. Security officials identified him as the commander of an Al-Shabaab unit operating in Galgaduud.

In April 2025, local SNA forces based in El-dher district carried out a successful coordinated offensive targeting Kharijite militant positions in the Galgaduud region, killing more than 10 militants and dismantling a major terrorist command base believed to have been used for planning attacks across the region.

In July 2026, senior officials from the Somali National Army operating in Galmudug and their counterparts from the Somali regional state reached an agreement in the Balanbale district of the Galgaduud region to enhance border security and bilateral cooperation, aimed at preventing the flow of illicit weapons and addressing security-related incidents.

Critical Note

The visit by the 77th Brigade Commander to Masagawaa reflects the continued emphasis on maintaining pressure on Al-Shabaab in central Somalia. The Masagawaa area has been a repeated target of militant attacks, and the establishment of a permanent police presence through the new station signals an effort to extend state authority beyond military operations.

However, the security situation in Galgaduud remains complex. Al-Shabaab continues to demonstrate its ability to launch attacks on military positions, and the region has also experienced inter-clan violence that complicates stabilisation efforts. The success of operations like those conducted by the 77th Brigade depends not only on military pressure but also on the ability of local authorities to provide governance and services that address the grievances that militant groups exploit. The new police station in Masagawaa is a step in that direction, but its effectiveness will depend on whether it can operate consistently and earn the trust of the local community.
