Somali Army Chief Visits Baardheere Bridge, Pledges Rehabilitation of Key Infrastructure

BAARDHEERE — The Commander of the Somali National Army (SNA) Land Forces, Brigadier General Sahal Abdullahi Omar (Gen. Khaalid), has visited the Baardheere bridge in the Gedo region to assess severe structural damage that has rendered the vital crossing completely inoperable.

During the inspection, the commander assessed the general condition of the river and the riverbanks in the area, evaluating the security and humanitarian situation amid fears of potential severe flooding in parts of Somalia. The bridge’s collapse has created a significant obstacle to the movement of people and goods, disrupting access to essential services for communities on both sides of the river.

General Khaalid was accompanied by the commander of the 36th Battalion of the 43rd Division of the SNA, Lieutenant Colonel Osman Sheikh Abdi (Qorax), and Baardheere district officials, who provided briefings on the security situation along the riverbanks and the community’s basic needs.

Assessment and Commitment to Repair

Baardheere district commissioner, Mohamed Abdullahi Osman, provided the visiting delegation with a detailed overview of the challenges facing the community, emphasizing the urgent need for government intervention to rehabilitate the bridge and restore access. The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has warned of the potential for severe flooding, and the assessment of the Baardheere bridge comes amid broader efforts to enhance disaster preparedness and climate resilience across the country.

The Somali Air Force has also been mobilized to support potential relief efforts as concerns grow over the impact of anticipated heavy rains, with SoDMA coordinating with various agencies to ensure communities are prepared for flooding.

Jubaland’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has issued a warning about expected heavy rains and flooding that could affect parts of the federal member state starting from October 2026, with up to 12 districts potentially vulnerable. The Minister stated that approximately 1.8 million people could be affected by the forecasted rains and floods, with more than 351,000 people potentially displaced if major flooding occurs.

Gen. Khaalid affirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges in the area, giving priority to the rehabilitation of the Baardheere bridge. The bridge is considered essential for the movement of people and goods, connecting communities on both sides of the river.

Critical Note

The SNA commander’s visit to the Baardheere bridge highlights the critical infrastructure challenges facing communities in the Gedo region. The collapse of the bridge has isolated communities and disrupted access to essential services, with limited government resources and capacity to address such infrastructure needs.

While General Khaalid’s commitment to rehabilitation is a positive signal, the government has not indicated a specific timeline for when repairs will begin. The broader challenge of disaster preparedness and infrastructure resilience in Somalia’s riverine areas underscores the need for sustained investment and coordination. The federal government must ensure that its commitments translate into concrete action, particularly as communities face the prospect of severe flooding and further displacement.
