MOGADISHU — Somalia’s Defence Minister, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, has issued a stark warning to opposition figures, stating that if they mobilise clan militias, “we will eliminate them and put an end to anyone who opposes us; we are upholding the authority of the state.”
The statement, made around the same time as a major weapons seizure in Mogadishu, marks a significant escalation in the government’s rhetoric against political opponents. Fiqi’s language, which includes a direct threat to “eliminate” those who mobilise armed groups, goes beyond previous warnings about uncontrolled weapons in the capital.
The Minister’s threat comes as security forces intercepted a Toyota vehicle carrying a large cache of weapons in the Kaaraan district of Mogadishu. According to local reports, the vehicle was stopped at the Jiiro-Wacbuudhan intersection, where a search uncovered 30 AK-47 rifles and 10 BKM-type machine guns.
Local sources said the vehicle and the weapons were subsequently taken to the Presidential Palace, received by Maslax, the commander of the presidential guard forces. Other reports indicated that the seized weapons belong to a government official whose name has not been disclosed, and that authorities have not wanted to release his details to the media.
Investigations have reportedly been launched into the vehicle’s route to determine where the weapons came from and where they were being taken. The intersection remained closed for several hours before being reopened. As of Sunday, no official statement had been issued by government security agencies about the incident or confirming who owns the seized weapons.
A Pattern of Escalating Rhetoric
Fiqi’s threat is not an isolated statement. In June 2026, he declared that “the era of uncontrolled weapons is over” and warned opposition figures against mobilising clan militias. That warning followed armed mobilisation by clan militia in Beledweyne, where fighters loyal to the Xawaadle sub-clan took up strategic positions in response to Fiqi’s rhetoric directed at former NISA chief Abdullahi Mohamed Ali “Sanbaloolshe.”
The Defence Minister has also accused opposition figures of organising armed groups with the intent to seize power, and has stated that anyone who raises a hand against the country’s security should not be shown leniency. His latest statement, with its explicit threat to “eliminate” opponents, represents a further hardening of that position.
Weapons Seizures Across Mogadishu
The Kaaraan interception echoes a series of high-profile weapons recovery operations conducted by Somali security forces in Mogadishu over recent months. In June 2026, police seized a large cache of illegal weapons from the Elite Hotel in Mogadishu’s Lido Beach area, as reported in FTL Somalia’s coverage of the Elite Hotel raid. The inventory included heavy-caliber combat equipment and long-range tactical systems. The Banadir Regional Police Commissioner described the stash as a combination of gear used by armed groups involved in local destabilization and new equipment designed to facilitate future security breaches.
Police also seized six vehicles and weapons during clashes in the Marinayo area of Mogadishu, as detailed in FTL Somalia’s report on the Marinayo seizures. Following the June clashes, Somali police publicly displayed a cache of weapons and military vehicles they claimed were seized during operations against armed groups linked to opposition politicians, as reported in FTL Somalia’s coverage of the weapons display.
The interception in Kaaraan also comes as security agencies in Mogadishu are on high alert following intelligence that more than 100 Al-Shabaab elements have been deployed across the capital with the intent to conduct infiltration operations and support possible high-profile assassinations, as reported in FTL Somalia’s coverage of the security alert.
Critical Note
The Defence Minister’s statement that the government will “eliminate” anyone who opposes it is not merely a warning about illegal weapons. It is a declaration that political opposition, if expressed through armed mobilisation, will be met with lethal force. The language is unusually direct for a serving minister and raises serious questions about the government’s commitment to political dialogue and the rule of law.
The timing of the statement, coming around the same time as a major weapons seizure in Kaaraan, suggests that the government is preparing for a confrontation with opposition groups. But the incident also raises uncomfortable questions. According to local accounts, the intercepted weapons were taken to the Presidential Palace rather than to a police evidence facility. If the weapons belonged to a government official, as reports suggest, then the government’s own house is not in order.
Fiqi’s threat to “eliminate” opponents also invites scrutiny of the government’s record on extrajudicial killings and the treatment of political dissent. Somalia’s international partners have repeatedly urged the government to respect human rights and the rule of law. A minister publicly threatening to eliminate opponents sends a different message. It suggests that the government views political opposition not as a legitimate part of democratic competition but as a security threat to be neutralised by force.
The public will draw its own conclusions. If the government can seize weapons from opposition figures and threaten to eliminate them, but cannot explain why a vehicle carrying 40 heavy weapons was taken to the Presidential Palace, the credibility of its security narrative will suffer. The absence of an official explanation for the Kaaraan incident, combined with the Minister’s threatening rhetoric, creates an impression of a government that is willing to use force against its opponents while shielding its own officials from scrutiny.
