Amnesty International Presents a New 10-Point Human Rights Plan to Somali Government

Amnesty International has presented a new 10-point plan on human rights to the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS).

The global human rights organization sent the 10-point plan to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Tuesday.

It hit out at President Mohamud’s administration for failure to fulfill its promises on the provision of justice and security to all the people of Somalia.

“We hoped that President Mohamud’s election on May 2022 presented Somalia with a chance to address the human rights challenges the country has faced,” read the Amnesty statement.

Muleya Mwananyanda reminded President Mohamud of his promises to Somalis.

Mwananyanda is Amnesty International’s Regional Director for East and Southern Africa.

Its 10-point plan includes the protection of civilians in conflict, reforming the judicial system, upholding and respecting freedom of expression, and safeguarding children’s rights.

Others are the protection of internally displaced persons (IDPs), ensuring that everyone has access to good health, and justice and reparation for abuses and injustices that foreign forces commit.

Amnesty also reminded President Mohamud to establish the National Human Rights Commission, and prioritize the fight against impunity and corruption.

It reminded the President to mitigate climate change and any other crisis.
