BAIDOA — The Commander of the Somali National Army (SNA), Brigadier General Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud, has officially issued sweeping rank promotions to the frontline troops who successfully executed the high-stakes military mission to reopen the vital arterial route connecting Mogadishu and Baidoa.
A Historic Logistical Victory
Addressing military personnel at a secure forward operating base in Baidoa, the commander highly commended the soldiers for their strategic accomplishment. He pointed out that militant adversaries had inflicted severe, prolonged economic and humanitarian hardship on civilians attempting to utilize the road.
He formally characterized the victory as a historic moment of celebration for all Somalis and stressed the absolute importance of heavily reinforcing security architecture in the newly liberated territories now fully controlled by the federal government.
The commander granted every participating soldier an immediate one-rank promotion as direct acknowledgment of the decisive defeat they delivered to Al-Shabaab militants. He further noted that the commanding officers and their tactical deputies who directed the complex ground operation would receive identical rank advancements.
Breaking a 15-Year Blockade
“From the depths of my heart, I extend my deepest gratitude. To the best of my ability, I have promoted each of you by one rank, and those officers who led you will receive identical advancements,” stated Commander Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud during the military briefing.
He further lauded the national troops for permanently liberating the lengthy commercial thoroughfare between Mogadishu and Baidoa, which had suffered under a strict Al-Shabaab blockade since 2009. The commander praised the forces for their relentless, ongoing pursuit of retreating militant fighters into the surrounding bushlands.
The Somali government previously declared the successful restoration of this essential passage after fierce, sustained combat in the Daynuunay area of the Bay region, where militant units that had persistently obstructed civilian transit were decisively crushed.
These strategic promotions arrive as Somali National Army contingents continue to aggressively escalate their nationwide kinetic campaigns against Al-Shabaab elements, maintaining a strict operational objective of securing the nation and permanently reopening all vital transportation arteries.
