COVID-19 Forces Cancellation of Independence Day Celebrations

President Musa Bihi Abdi of Somaliland has announced a cancellation of all Independence Day celebrations in the country.

Bihi said that all the celebrations, which were expected to take place on May 18 and June 26, are now suspended because of the deadly COVID-19 disease.

His government has taken this preventative measure to curb the spread of the virulent disease in the country.

COVID-19, which the World Health Organization (WHO) has rightly labeled a pandemic, has disrupted life globally.

The pandemic has hit just when Somaliland was planning its 29th Independence Day celebrations.

The Horn of Africa nation observes Independence Day to celebrate the day (May 18, 1991) when it obtained independence from Somalia.
