Duchess of Edinburgh Holds Talks with President Hassan on Somalia Visit

MOGADISHU — Her Royal Highness Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, has concluded a focused two-day diplomatic visit to Somalia. The trip, her first to the nation, took place between February 23 and 24 ahead of International Women’s Day, highlighting the United Kingdom’s commitment to supporting Somali women’s rights and survivors of conflict-related sexual violence.

The visit commenced with a high-level reception at the National Palace (Villa Somalia), where the Duchess was welcomed by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Their discussions centered on bolstering enduring bilateral ties, prioritizing educational and social development, and implementing clear measures to address sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).

President Hassan Sheikh praised Her Royal Highness for her global advocacy work on behalf of women and children. In turn, the Duchess expressed full support for Somalia’s Women, Peace and Security National Action Plan, urging its continued implementation to enhance local conditions and ensure women are included in peace processes.

Amplifying Women’s Voices and Survivors

Joined by First Daughter Jihan Abdullahi Hassan at Uganda House within the presidential compound, the Duchess met directly with survivors of sexual violence perpetrated by the Al-Shabaab militant group. This poignant meeting underscored the critical importance of ongoing UK-Somalia security and counter-terrorism cooperation.

The Duchess also received briefings from key local partners, including the Ifrah Foundation, the ALIGHT Somali Women’s Leadership Initiative, and the Somali Women Study Centre. These organizations detailed the challenging environment they navigate, explaining how ongoing conflict, severe droughts, and resource scarcity continue to worsen the prevalence of SGBV.

In a display of solidarity with the nation’s security forces, the schedule additionally featured a visit to a village in the Lower Shabelle region to meet with the wives of serving Somali soldiers.

UK Health and Humanitarian Support

During an inspection of a major hospital in Mogadishu, the Duchess examined a vital, UK-supported sexual and reproductive health program. This initiative is currently active across 39 health facilities in the Banadir, Bay, Mudug, Lower Shabelle, and Galgaduud regions—areas facing significant challenges due to insecurity and population displacement.

The United Kingdom has provided substantial logistical and financial backing to Somali organizations in this sector, benefiting nearly 130,000 women and girls during the 2024–2025 period. This assistance enhances medical services in vulnerable areas by supplying hygiene products, psychological support, and essential healthcare to trauma victims, helping to reduce the stigma experienced by those seeking care.

Following the successful completion of her mission objectives in Mogadishu, the Duchess departed on February 24 to continue her regional diplomatic engagements.
