The Government of India has formally declared its opposition to Israel’s recent recognition of Somaliland, reiterating its steadfast support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
During a press conference held on January 9, 2026, Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesperson for the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, clarified India’s diplomatic stance. He emphasized the deep-rooted, historical ties that exist between the two nations.
“We reaffirm the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia,” Jaiswal stated during the briefing.
The statement positions India alongside other major global powers and international organizations that advocate for a unified Somalia. By explicitly opposing the move by Israel, New Delhi has signaled its commitment to established international norms regarding Somalia’s borders and its rejection of external interference that could lead to the country’s fragmentation.
