Jubaland President in Deal with Rivals to End Gedo Tensions

President Ahmed Madobe of Jubaland State signed a deal with his two fiercest rivals to stop the tensions in Gedo from escalating.

The deal is likely to transform the geopolitical landscape in one of the country’s most fragile states.

For years, Madobe has struggled to bring Abdirashid Hidig and Abdinasir Seeraar to his side.

In August 2019, the two leaders challenged Madobe in the state’s presidential elections before losing. Since then, they have challenged his election.

Hidig and Seeraar accuse President Madobe of winning an election marred with external interference, rigging, and violence.

Details of the deal the three leaders signed remain scanty. However, sources reveal that Kenya played a crucial role in bringing them to the table to iron out their differences.
