MOGADISHU — The Federal Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Mohamed Abdi Hayir (Maareeye), toured agricultural communities in Afgooye District, where growers are currently confronting severe water shortages.
During the tour, the Minister engaged directly with local farmers to assess the difficulties impacting irrigation and agricultural production in one of Somalia‘s principal breadbaskets.
Canal Restoration
Farmers highlighted extreme water deficiency and the abandonment of critical irrigation canals, problems that have significantly reduced crop outputs and interfered with seasonal farming operations.
Speaking to the community, Minister Maareeye confirmed that the Federal Government, via the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, will implement decisive actions to address the crisis.
He stressed that initiatives will be strengthened to restore and enhance irrigation infrastructure to elevate overall agricultural output in the Lower Shabelle region.
The visit demonstrates the government’s renewed dedication to tackling drought-related issues and assisting farmers in vital agricultural zones.
