MOGADISHU — The Ministry of Internal Security issued a statement late last night clarifying security procedures at Aden Adde International Airport, following reports that former high-ranking officials were turned away from the Halane base perimeter.
The incident involved Former President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, former Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble, and other members of the opposition group known as the Council for the Future.
Government Cites Protocol Violation
In its statement, the Ministry denied that the officials were explicitly banned from entering the complex. Instead, authorities argued that the delegation refused to comply with established security protocols regarding armed escorts and designated entry points.
“The long-standing security procedures for Aden Adde International Airport are fully operational… That procedure stipulates that after 5:00 PM, entry is to be made via the Marina Gate, and entering the airport with armed troops is not permitted,” the Ministry stated.
Government officials alleged that the former leaders attempted to enter the facility with a “very large number of troops” via a gate not designated for night use, an action the Ministry described as a threat to the safety of the airport.
“No former officials were denied entry to the airport; rather, there were those who refused to comply with the established security procedures,” the statement reiterated.
Political Context
The standoff occurs amidst heightened political tension in Mogadishu. The delegation was reportedly en route to a meeting with Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe and Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni, both of whom are currently residing at a hotel within the Halane compound.
The Council for the Future, which aligns the regional leaders with federal opposition figures, has been vocal in its criticism of the current administration’s handling of the election process and proposed constitutional amendments.
Opposition leaders have recently declared they will not leave the capital until a consensus is reached regarding the country’s electoral model, urging President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to engage in serious dialogue as his term nears its final phase.
The Ministry of Internal Security concluded its statement by urging all parties, regardless of status, to respect the laws to ensure the general safety of Somali citizens.
