MOGADISHU — Mogadishu and the Turkish city of Konya are set to establish a sister-city partnership focused on enhancing municipal cooperation and supporting the Somali capital’s urban recovery efforts.
The announcement coincided with a joint sanitation campaign led by Banadir Governor and Mayor of Mogadishu, Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Mungab), alongside Turkish Ambassador Alper Aktaş along the Lido Beach coastline.
Focus on Urban Renewal
Mayor Mungab stated that the initiative represents a wider endeavor to restore Mogadishu’s image and enhance public services. He emphasized that cleanliness and civic responsibility are crucial components of the capital’s recovery strategy.
High-level officials joined the cleanup to highlight a shared commitment to environmental management and urban renewal in the coastal city.
Institutional Support
Ambassador Aktaş noted that the proposed partnership with Konya—a significant economic and industrial hub in Turkey—would strengthen institutional connections and support capacity development within Mogadishu’s municipal administration.
According to officials, the partnership will facilitate the sharing of expertise in key areas:
