Mogadishu Port Introduces Transshipment Services Amid Record Cargo Volumes

MOGADISHUMogadishu Port has initiated transshipment operations for the first time, representing a significant transformation in Somalia’s maritime standing as freight volumes reached unprecedented heights in January 2026.

According to the Mogadishu Port Authority (MPA), the new service was officially launched with the arrival of the MSC Silver II, which offloaded transfer cargo that was subsequently loaded onto the MSC Malin II.

Strategic Shift to Regional Hub

The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has established a direct route connecting Colombo, Sri Lanka, with Mogadishu. This development enhances the port’s status from a final destination for imports to a regional transfer center, solidifying Somalia’s position on vital Indian Ocean trade pathways.

Port officials credited the operational success to administrative reforms, swifter cargo processing, and decreased ship turnaround durations.

Record-Breaking Statistics

MPA statistics revealed that January 2026 marked the port’s most active month on record.

  • Total Volume: 21,650 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).

  • Traffic: Serviced 16 container ships.

Authorities stated that these figures demonstrate increasing trust among global shipping companies in the port’s security and operational capabilities.

Economic Implications

For the Federal Government of Somalia, this advancement is anticipated to increase revenue streams and draw investment by broadening income sources beyond conventional import tariffs.

Officials noted that the port’s expanding function as a logistics center is expected to aid economic revival and reinforce Somalia’s stance in East African commerce.
