President Commends Somali Army Heroes for Saving 20 Million Citizens

MOGADISHU — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has extended congratulations to all ranks of the Somali National Army (SNA) and their families on the occasion of the 66th anniversary of its establishment, during a commemorative event held in the capital.

The ceremony brought together senior government officials, military leaders, and members of the public to honor the history and progress of the national armed forces. Various units and divisions of the army were presented, showcasing their organization, discipline, and readiness, including a display of troops equipped with modern military vehicles, advanced weaponry, and combat aircraft.

President Praises Army’s Humanitarian Role

During the event, President Mohamud highlighted the army’s crucial role in national defense and civilian protection, emphasizing that the forces also contribute significantly to humanitarian efforts and community rescue operations.

“Heroes of the Somali National Army have saved 20 million Somalis. They do not only defend with weapons, but also provide assistance. The achievements they have made today will be written in history. Congratulations,” the president said.

He further noted that the armed forces have made considerable advancements, asserting that no nation can develop without a strong military and that individual misconduct should not represent the entire institution.

“Our armed forces are the shield of our nation and the foundation upon which Somalia’s peaceful and prosperous future will be built,” President Mohamud stated.

Defence Minister Highlights Operational Successes

Minister of Defence Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, present at the event, reported that the army has attained advanced capabilities and achieved concrete successes in operations, including the reopening of the road connecting Mogadishu and Baidoa.

Minister Fiqi previously confirmed that government forces have fully secured the strategic arterial road connecting Mogadishu and Baidoa, marking a significant development in ongoing national military operations.

“The road is now secure for civilian travel, reestablishing essential transportation between the capital and the Bay region,” the minister said in a national television interview following the operation.

Somali National Army Commander Brigadier General Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud issued sweeping rank promotions to frontline troops who successfully executed the high-stakes military mission to reopen the vital route, which had suffered under a strict Al-Shabaab blockade since 2009.

“From the depths of my heart, I extend my deepest gratitude. To the best of my ability, I have promoted each of you by one rank, and those officers who led you will receive identical advancements,” the commander stated during a military briefing in Baidoa.

Command Transition and Modernization

The anniversary celebration follows a formal command transition ceremony for the Somali National Army. Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, joined by Defence Minister Fiqi, led the formal handover of duties from outgoing Chief of Defence Forces Major General Odowaa Yusuf Raage to incoming commander Brigadier General Ibrahim Mohamed Mohamud.

During that ceremony, the Prime Minister instructed the new commander to intensify efforts in rebuilding the army structure, with a focus on national defense, preserving unity, and the total eradication of militant groups.

Minister Fiqi characterized the transition as a standard governance procedure, stating that his ministry remains committed to advancing the army’s capabilities, discipline, and resources.

Army Commander Celebrates Anniversary

Somali National Army Commander Brigadier General Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud described the forces as characterized by resilience and bravery, considering the anniversary a moment of pride.

“Over the past year, our forces have made significant advances in dismantling terrorist networks, reclaiming key territories, and protecting our people. These efforts have directly contributed to the reduction in Al-Shabaab attacks and improved security across the country,” the commander said.

Launch of Orphans Care Agency

A key highlight of the celebrations was the launch of an Orphans Care Agency designed to support families of fallen soldiers. Authorities said the initiative recognizes the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces and reinforces the state’s commitment to their welfare.

Commitment to National Security

The anniversary celebration served not only as a tribute to the army’s legacy since its establishment in 1960, but also as a demonstration of its ongoing transformation into a more capable and modern force committed to securing the nation.

Defence Minister Fiqi and Chief of Defence Forces Brigadier General Ibrahim recently concluded a comprehensive tour of multiple SNA forward operating bases in Baidoa as part of a broader federal initiative to evaluate troop conditions and strengthen regional stabilization measures.

The federal government has in recent years prioritized rebuilding the armed forces as part of broader efforts to stabilize Somalia and transition security duties from international partners to national institutions.

Other officials attending the ceremony also offered their congratulations, commending the army’s accomplishments in protecting the country and its people.
