Saudi Arabia and Egypt Rally Behind Somalia’s Sovereignty; Condemn “Parallel Governance”

CAIRO/RIYADHSaudi Arabia and Egypt have issued strong statements reaffirming their backing for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, creating a unified diplomatic front against recent moves to recognize Somaliland.

Riyadh Rejects Foreign Intervention

In Riyadh, the Saudi Cabinet, chaired by King Salman bin Abdulaziz, officially approved the results of an extraordinary gathering of foreign ministers from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

According to a government statement, the Cabinet condemned any actions contrary to Somalia’s unity, specifically opposing “foreign intervention in the nation’s internal affairs or attempts to compromise its territorial unity.”

This stance directly addresses the increasing resistance from regional nations regarding Israel‘s recent decision to recognize Somaliland, a move Riyadh characterized as an initiative aimed at establishing parallel governance structures.

Cairo Strengthening Security Ties

Simultaneously, in Cairo, Somalia’s Foreign Minister Abdisalam Ali engaged in high-level talks with his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty.

The discussions centered on broadening bilateral cooperation and harmonizing stances on significant regional developments. Minister Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s support for Somalia’s unity, emphasizing Cairo’s stance on respecting national borders against a backdrop of increased regional tensions.

Strategic Partnership

Beyond security, the two nations pledged to enhance ties across various sectors. Minister Abdelatty highlighted the significance of strengthening cooperation in:

  • Trade and infrastructure

  • Electricity and renewable energy

  • Pharmaceuticals and agriculture

Both Saudi Arabia and Egypt were among the initial nations to openly condemn Israel’s acknowledgment of Somaliland. Officials describe this coordination as evidence of a wider regional consensus supporting Mogadishu’s sovereignty under international law.
