SoDMA Launches Relief Drive for 5,700 Somali Families in Balcad

Balcad, Somalia – The National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has rolled out a three-month humanitarian relief program to assist thousands of families grappling with the impact of droughts and seasonal floods in HirShabelle State.

Commissioner of SoDMA, Mahamuud Moallim, announced the initiative in Balcad district, confirming that 5,705 families will receive urgent support. The program is designed to deliver essential supplies, including food rations, clean drinking water, and emergency medical care.

“This effort is part of the government’s commitment to protecting the most vulnerable communities in HirShabelle. We are ensuring that those affected by recurrent climate shocks can regain stability and dignity,” the SoDMA commissioner said.

The relief plan comes at a critical time as families in the Shabelle River basin continue to face food insecurity and health risks linked to both drought-driven displacement and flood damage to farmlands. Local officials and aid partners are expected to coordinate with SoDMA to oversee distribution and monitor the effectiveness of the assistance.

Authorities noted that the initiative is not only a short-term lifeline but also a step toward building community resilience in one of Somalia’s most climate-affected regions.
