Somali Defence Minister Inspects AUSSOM Base in Baidoa

BAIDOA — The Defence Minister of Somalia, H.E. Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, recently conducted a high-level strategic tour of the Sector 3 headquarters of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), located in the regional capital of Baidoa.

Evaluating Sector 3 Operations

During his frontline visit to the South West State operational hub, the Defence Minister held extensive, closed-door meetings with Sector 3 Commander Brigadier General Teklu Hurisa Janka. The AUSSOM commanders provided the Minister with comprehensive updates regarding the sector’s current tactical operations, recent battlefield achievements, and the status of ongoing joint ground initiatives.

The dialogue heavily focused on deeply integrating collaborative efforts between advancing Somali National Army (SNA) troops and AUSSOM personnel operating throughout South West State. This localized tactical review directly supports the broader federal agenda established when the SNA Command and AUSSOM leadership recently agreed to fast-track the national security transition plan without creating operational vacuums.

A Call for Enhanced Joint Offensives

Following the operational briefings, the Somali official highly praised the critical logistical and combat support provided by Sector 3 units to national military operations. Minister Fiqi formally acknowledged AUSSOM’s ongoing, dedicated initiatives to maintain baseline security and stability across the volatile nation.

Crucially, the Minister highlighted the immediate, pressing need for significantly enhanced joint military actions against entrenched Kharijite terrorist groups. By sustaining relentless kinetic pressure, the allied forces aim to rapidly degrade militant infrastructure, a mandate strongly reinforced when the UN Security Council officially extended AUSSOM’s authorization to conduct joint offensives alongside the SNA through 2026.

Strengthening International Defense Ties

This high-profile trip to Baidoa represents a core component of the Ministry of Defense’s overarching national strategy to drastically improve operational collaboration with all international allies on the ground. By specifically prioritizing active coordination with AUSSOM command structures, Mogadishu seeks to advance unified counter-terrorism initiatives and reinforce synchronized military operations.

Minister Fiqi’s commitment to fortifying the AUSSOM partnership on the ground perfectly aligns with his broader diplomatic efforts abroad, including recent high-level defense meetings in Rome where he actively sought to secure increased international financial and logistical backing for the African Union mission.
