MOGADISHU — The Somali National Army (SNA), operating with critical close-air and intelligence support from international partners, successfully eliminated 12 al-Shabaab militants and severely injured several others during a coordinated security operation in the Daynuney area of southwestern Somalia.
Intensifying the Rural Offensive
According to an official statement released by the Ministry of Defense on Monday, the early morning tactical operation in the Bay region is a vital component of continuous, high-intensity federal efforts designed to systematically weaken al-Shabaab’s operational capabilities and drastically improve security nationwide.
“Our forces and international allies are dedicated to conducting these operations to eradicate terrorism and establish permanent peace throughout Somalia,” the Ministry’s official statement from Mogadishu read. This aggressive posture closely mirrors recent, highly successful operations by elite SNA units, such as the Gorgor Commandos, who recently dismantled militant leadership networks in neighboring Lower Shabelle.
Reclaiming the Hinterlands
Although al-Shabaab was decisively forced out of the capital city of Mogadishu by federal and allied forces in 2011, the extremist network remains highly active across the country’s vast rural regions. From these remote strongholds, militants continuously attempt to conduct asymmetric ambushes, extort local communities, and plant improvised explosive devices (IEDs) along critical civilian transit routes.
However, recent intensified, multi-front operations by allied forces have resulted in the federal government rapidly reclaiming multiple entrenched al-Shabaab positions. By aggressively destroying illicit hideouts, dismantling hidden supply caches, and systematically hunting down remaining fighters, the SNA is effectively neutralizing the rural insurgency. These localized tactical victories directly complement the military’s broader regional successes, including the historic reopening of the heavily blockaded Mogadishu-Baidoa arterial road and the recent, devastating SNA ambushes that dismantled militant supply convoys in the Hiiraan region.
