Somali Minister Explores Saudi Port Technology

JEDDAH — The Minister of Ports and Marine Transport for Somalia’s Federal Government, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, alongside Mogadishu Port’s Director General, Ambassador Mohamed Ali Nur “Americo,” recently led a senior maritime delegation to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The high-level working visit focused specifically on touring the expansive Jeddah Islamic Port and the state-of-the-art Red Sea Gateway Terminal. The primary objective of the trip was to closely examine Saudi Arabia’s specialized, world-class knowledge in port administration, advanced terminal operations, and global logistics.

Modernizing Mogadishu’s Maritime Gateway

During the visit, dialogues between the Somali delegation and Saudi port authorities centered on significantly enhancing bilateral collaboration and sharing technical expertise. Officials discussed actionable frameworks for implementing global maritime standards to assist in rapidly modernizing Somalia’s domestic port facilities.

This technical exchange trip closely follows the landmark maritime cooperation agreement recently formalized between Mogadishu and Riyadh, which aims to secure critical Red Sea trade routes and deeply integrate the economic relations of both nations.

For Somalia, adopting these international operational standards is a critical and timely step. The Port of Mogadishu has recently experienced record-breaking cargo volumes and has just begun introducing regional transshipment services. Implementing advanced Saudi administrative models will help the port scale up its logistical capabilities and maintain its growing status as a highly competitive commercial hub in the Horn of Africa.
