Somali President in Doha for Security, Economic Talks

DOHA — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Doha on Friday for an official visit focused on strengthening bilateral relations between Somalia and Qatar.

The President and his delegation received a warm welcome from Qatari officials upon reaching the capital. During his visit, Mohamud is scheduled to engage in high-level talks with Qatari leaders to enhance collaboration in critical areas, including security, economic development, and political stability.

Diplomatic Pivot

This journey constitutes part of a wider diplomatic initiative by the Somali leader to expand international partnerships. The presidency announced that discussions in Doha will concentrate on promoting Somalia’s national interests and gaining global backing for the nation’s unity and territorial integrity.

The diplomatic efforts in Doha follow a notable transformation in Somalia’s regional foreign policy. Last month, Somalia terminated all agreements with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), nullifying pacts covering essential port operations, security cooperation, and defence arrangements.

Counterbalance to Tensions

Mogadishu pointed to “detrimental actions” by Abu Dhabi that it asserts compromise its national unity, especially as confrontations intensify regarding the status of the breakaway Somaliland region.

Consequently, Qatar has emerged as an increasingly crucial partner for Somalia, delivering continuous assistance in infrastructure development and humanitarian relief. This visit highlights Mogadishu’s dedication to reinforcing its strategic connections within the Gulf as a counterbalance to recent regional tensions.
