MOGADISHU – Somalia’s President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, engaged in a high-level telephone discussion on Monday with Qatar’s Emir, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The dialogue underscores the deepening diplomatic ties between the two nations following Mogadishu’s decision to sever relations with the United Arab Emirates over perceived violations of its sovereignty.
According to a statement from Villa Somalia, President Mohamud and Emir Tamim examined bilateral relations, regional developments, and matters of mutual concern. The conversation highlighted the strengthening bond between Mogadishu and Doha in the wake of shifting geopolitical alliances in the Horn of Africa.
Reaffirming Support
The official statement noted that the Emir “reaffirmed during the call Qatar’s full support for the legitimate institutions of the Somali State, and its commitment to enhancing its security and stability, and safeguarding the interests of its people.”
President Mohamud expressed “profound gratitude and appreciation” to Doha for its supportive stance regarding Somalia’s stability, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. This appreciation comes as Somalia navigates a complex diplomatic landscape, having recently accused the UAE of undermining its national unity.
Strategic Partnership
“The call also explored opportunities for cooperation between the two brotherly nations, and approaches to enhance and expand it,” the statement indicated.
Doha has emerged as one of Mogadishu’s most critical partners since diplomatic relations between Somalia and the UAE deteriorated late last year. Qatar has since moved to solidify this partnership, recently establishing a defense cooperation agreement and offering significant assistance to the Federal Government in securing the capital and adjacent regions.
