MOGADISHU — Somalia’s Federal Government has officially introduced Somtürk, a major collaborative fisheries enterprise formed between the Somali Fisheries Company and Turkey’s OYAK Group, with the strategic objective of advancing the nation’s blue economy and promoting the sustainable management of marine resources.
Advancing the Blue Economy
The launch event, taking place in Mogadishu, saw participation from Second Deputy Prime Minister Jibril Abdirashid Haji, who emphasized the tremendous strategic value of the collaboration. He characterized the project as a pivotal advancement for economic growth and the responsible, structured exploitation of Somalia’s extensive oceanic assets.
According to federal authorities, Somtürk intends to improve fisheries production and oversight, safeguard marine ecosystems, and strictly address illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities that remain a substantial challenge to Somalia’s economic stability and environmental well-being.
Deepening Bilateral Economic Ties
The enterprise represents a vital component of the Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy’s comprehensive strategy to advance the commercial fishing industry and maximize income from oceanic resources. The ministry has already granted the company its initial operational permit, signifying the formal beginning of Somtürk’s commercial operations. This private-sector initiative closely aligns with broader federal efforts to adopt global maritime standards and deepen logistical partnerships with Turkey.
Authorities indicate that this joint initiative will draw fresh investments, introduce advanced processing technologies, and generate crucial employment prospects, especially for coastal populations. Furthermore, Somtürk is anticipated to significantly fortify the fisheries value chain, encompassing domestic production, industrial processing, and international commercialization.
During the launch, the Ministry reiterated its steadfast dedication to the sustainable development, preservation, and effective administration of Somalia’s maritime resources through deep cooperation with both domestic and global partners, guaranteeing enduring advantages for the Somali population.
