Somalia Launches First National Ship Registry Since 1991

MOGADISHU — The Ministry of Ports and Marine Transport in Somalia has officially registered the commercial vessel Guney under the Somali flag, a historic milestone described by authorities as the first such national registration since the country’s state collapse in 1991.

Rebuilding the National Registry

According to top ministry officials, the ship—formally identified as the Guney (IMO No. 8230417)—was officially added to Somalia’s national ship registry after the government successfully established the necessary, modernized legal and regulatory frameworks required for international maritime operations.

This registration marks a massive advancement in Somalia’s ongoing efforts to rebuild its lucrative maritime sector, which has remained severely underdeveloped for decades due to historical conflict, institutional breakdown, and the prolonged lack of a functional national registry. The breakthrough directly follows recent high-level meetings where the Prime Minister received a comprehensive maritime report and formally endorsed new ship registration initiatives.

Expanding the Blue Economy

The ministry highlighted that this achievement follows Mogadishu’s aggressive adoption of key national legislation and strict alignment with international maritime regulations. This legal overhaul effectively allows the country to regain sovereign control over its shipping registry and engage far more actively in global maritime trade.

In an official statement, the ministry characterized the development as a foundational pillar of a much broader, comprehensive strategy to modernize national maritime infrastructure, expand sea-based commerce, and aggressively enhance the nation’s “blue economy”—a framework prioritizing the sustainable economic use of ocean and coastal resources. This directly complements ongoing initiatives by the Ports Minister to establish robust Somali national shipping networks.

To capitalize on this momentum, federal authorities extended an open, formal invitation to global ship owners, maritime investors, and international partners to register their vessels under the Somali flag and invest heavily in the country’s revitalized maritime sector. The bold initiative aligns perfectly with the federal government’s broader economic reform agenda and the core development priorities outlined within the National Transformation Plan (NTP).
