Somalia, Saudi Arabia Boost Maritime Ties and Environmental Standards

ST. PETERSBURG — Somalia and Saudi Arabia have formally reached an agreement to significantly enhance bilateral maritime cooperation and bring their respective shipping industries into strict alignment with global environmental standards. The mutual pledge was solidified during high-level discussions held at the International Transport and Logistics Forum in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Strengthening Bilateral Maritime Ties

The Somali diplomatic delegation was led by the Manager of the Mogadishu Port Authority, Ambassador Mohamed Ali Nur (Americo), and the Somali Ambassador to Russia, Mohamed Abuukar Subeer. They engaged in extensive strategic talks with a specialized team from Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Transport and Logistics, which included Naif Saleh Samkari, Director of the Marine Environment Department, and environmental specialist Najla Alfarraj.

According to joint statements, the talks successfully resulted in a mutual commitment to expedite the implementation of existing bilateral agreements and aggressively improve technical collaboration in maritime development. This diplomatic push aligns closely with Mogadishu’s recent milestone achievement of officially reopening its national ship registry to expand the country’s sea-based commerce.

Aligning with Global Environmental Standards

Beyond standard logistics, both parties committed heavily to strengthening coordination regarding marine environmental protection and industrial emission reduction. Specifically, the delegations agreed to adhere strictly to the stringent environmental guidelines set forth by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

This environmental focus mirrors the Somali Federal Cabinet’s recent ratification of international maritime safety conventions and protocols governing civil liability for oil pollution. The St. Petersburg accord is widely anticipated to assist Somalia in rapidly modernizing its domestic maritime sector, drastically enhancing port efficiency, and establishing the nation as a highly competitive participant in both regional and global shipping markets.

Ultimately, the gathering demonstrates Somalia’s continuously expanding engagement with prominent regional and international partners to build sustainable maritime infrastructure while preserving fragile marine ecosystems.
