The Somali Ambassador to India visited Somali citizens in prison

MUMBAI — The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Somalia to India, Dr. Abdullahi Mohamed Odawa, recently visited detained Somali citizens and formally attended the first hearing of their ongoing trial.

Diplomatic Advocacy for Detained Citizens

Ambassador Odawa has been on an official working visit to Mumbai in the Indian state of Maharashtra over the past few days. A critical focus of his diplomatic trip was visiting 44 Somali citizens currently held in prison after being apprehended by the Indian Navy during operations in the Indian Ocean.

Through sustained, high-level diplomatic efforts orchestrated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Government of Somalia, the detained citizens—who had been awaiting legal proceedings for an extended period—successfully appeared for their inaugural court session.

Accelerating the Legal Process

The highly anticipated hearing was personally attended by Ambassador Odawa, signaling the federal government’s strong commitment to ensuring due process and protecting the rights of its nationals abroad. This hands-on consular advocacy directly builds upon the Ambassador’s mandate to deepen bilateral cooperation, a priority highlighted when he officially presented his credentials to the President of India.

Following the session, both legal and diplomatic representatives agreed that the second phase of the trial must be expedited. Concluding his visit, the Ambassador publicly expressed high hopes that the legal process will be swift and that these citizens will ultimately regain their freedom.
