MOGADISHU – The Federal Republic of Somalia has expressed its full solidarity with the sisterly State of Kuwait following the missile and drone attacks targeting its territory.
The Federal Republic of Somalia strongly condemns these attacks and reaffirms its unwavering support for the sovereignty, security, stability, and territorial integrity of the State of Kuwait. Such actions threaten regional peace and security and contravene the principles of international law and the Charter of the United Nations.
The Federal Republic of Somalia stands firmly alongside the Government and people of Kuwait and calls for restraint, dialogue, and diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation and preserve peace, security, and stability in the Gulf region.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Somalia and Kuwait have maintained close diplomatic ties for decades, with Kuwait providing development assistance and humanitarian support to Somalia through various initiatives. The Federal Government of Somalia has consistently stood in solidarity with Gulf states facing security threats, reaffirming its commitment to regional stability and the sovereignty of allied nations.
Regional Stability Concerns
The missile and drone attacks on Kuwait represent the most recent development in a broader pattern of regional hostilities that Mogadishu says jeopardize stability and raise the risk of renewed conflict. Somalia previously condemned alleged attempts to carry out drone attacks targeting Saudi Arabia, which were reportedly intercepted and destroyed after entering Saudi airspace. At that time, Somalia warned that attacks aimed at governments’ security and key infrastructure undermine shared regional stability and could further escalate tensions in the region.
Commitment to International Law
The Somali government has emphasized the importance of respecting international law and established legal frameworks governing state sovereignty. The Federal Republic of Somalia previously reaffirmed its full solidarity with the State of Kuwait over a maritime submission by the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations, expressing concern over its potential impact on Kuwait’s established maritime zones. Somalia underscored the importance of adherence to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, United Nations Security Council Resolution 833, as well as relevant bilateral agreements.
Shared Interests in Regional Security
Somalia’s condemnation of the attacks on Kuwait reflects the broader geopolitical dynamics in the Gulf and Horn of Africa regions. Stability in the Gulf region is directly linked to security and economic interests in the Red Sea and Horn of Africa, particularly given long-standing trade, diaspora, and investment ties between Somalia and Gulf states.
As diplomatic engagement continues to expand, both sides have expressed their intention to continue deepening their partnership on shared priorities including peace, security, and sustainable development. Somalia’s active diplomatic role in Middle Eastern territorial matters aligns itself with international consensus on recognized borders and the peaceful resolution of disputes.
