Danab Commandos Kill Nine Al-Shabaab Militants, Including Commander, in Lower Shabelle Operation

MOGADISHU – Somalia’s elite Danab commandos have killed nine Al-Shabaab militants, including a field commander, in a planned operation in the Hantiwadaag area of the Lower Shabelle region, the Ministry of Defence and the Somali National Army High Command have confirmed.

The operation, which targeted militants reportedly using the area as a staging ground for attacks, resulted in the deaths of eight fighters and the commander who oversaw their operations. The Danab forces also destroyed militant positions and recovered weapons and equipment. The Danab Command, in a statement to state media, said operations against Al-Shabaab would continue, affirming that the forces have the capability to reach any location where the group attempts to hide.

An Expanding Campaign in the South

The Hantiwadaag operation is part of a broader military campaign across southern Somalia, where the SNA and its allies have stepped up pressure on Al-Shabaab. Earlier this month, Danab commandos killed seven militants, including a senior commander, in a planned overnight operation in the Sablaale district of Lower Shabelle, destroying training camps and facilities used for extremist indoctrination.

In a major operation, Danab commandos killed 25 Al-Shabaab militants during an overnight raid in Gaalware village in Lower Shabelle, recovering a cache of weapons including AK-47 rifles, an RPG-7 launcher, and a PKM machine gun. The Danab Brigade, whose name means “lightning” in Somali, was established in 2013 with U.S. support and has grown into a several-thousand-person force specialising in urban warfare against Al-Shabaab.

A Campaign of Attrition, Not Elimination

The military’s recent successes, including the killing of a commander in Hantiwadaag, reflect the increasing pressure being placed on Al-Shabaab’s leadership and fighters. A number of Al-Shabaab commanders have surrendered to Somali National Army forces on the frontlines in the Lower Shabelle region, marking a significant development in the government’s ongoing counter-terrorism campaign. The surrenders come after President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud renewed a government amnesty offer and declared a “final offensive” against the group.

Despite these tactical gains, the insurgency’s structural weaknesses remain entrenched. Al-Shabaab continues to control large areas of southern and central Somalia and has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to exploit political divisions and weak state institutions. The group’s resilience is partly a product of the governance vacuum that persists in areas where government control remains thin. While military pressure can degrade the group’s capabilities, it cannot by itself eliminate the conditions—corruption, clan grievances, and economic marginalisation—that allow the insurgency to endure.

The Danab commandos have intensified operations in Lower Shabelle, dismantling illegal tax collection networks and eliminating active nodes used by the group to extort money from local communities. They have previously destroyed numerous fortified hideouts, tactical outposts, and checkpoints that had long hindered local economic activity and jeopardised security. However, the insurgents have proven adept at regrouping and adapting to military pressure, often returning to areas after forces withdraw.

Way Forward

The killing of a commander and eight fighters in Hantiwadaag is a tactical success for the SNA and its partners. It demonstrates the growing capability of Somali forces to conduct targeted operations against a resilient and adaptive enemy. But in the broader context of Somalia’s long war against extremism, the strategic question remains unanswered: whether military pressure alone can break the insurgency, or whether it must be paired with a credible effort to build state institutions, deliver services, and address the grievances that fuel the conflict.

As the Danab commandos continue their operations, the government faces the challenge of translating battlefield gains into lasting stability—a task that has proven far more difficult than any single operation.
