MOGADISHU — Two young herders have killed a senior Al-Shabaab commander in the Ruunningood district of the Middle Shabelle region on August 17, 2026, in what the Ministry of Defence has described as a significant act of community resistance against the militants.
The slain commander was identified as Xasan Calasow Raage, also known as Xasan Xusuleey, a 50-year-old native of the Ruunningood district. He was a senior leader in the group’s operations in the Middle Shabelle region and served as the transport commander for the area. He had previously held the position of head of the group’s “Sakawaad” unit in Ruunningood and was well known in the district and surrounding areas.
The two young herders killed the commander and seized his AK-47 rifle and ammunition. The commander had been responsible for numerous abuses against the local population, including livestock theft, extortion, and disrupting movement in the district, and had forced many residents to flee their homes.
The Ministry of Defence commended the efforts of local communities in confronting Khawaarij militants, stating that this action demonstrates that the Somali people are united against terrorism.
Growing Community Resistance and Macawiisley Operations
The killing of Xasan Xusuleey is part of a broader pattern of community-led resistance against Al-Shabaab in central and southern Somalia. Community resistance against Al-Shabaab has been growing across central Somalia, with residents in the Hiiraan region also taking up arms against the militants. The government has encouraged local communities to defend themselves and cooperate with security forces.
Somali National Army troops, in coordination with local Macawiisley forces, have successfully repelled Al-Shabaab ambushes in the Hiiraan region. The Macawiisley militia, composed of local volunteers, has played a vital role in supporting SNA offensives and maintaining control over liberated villages. SNA forces operating alongside local Macawiisley community fighters have conducted successful ground operations in the Hiiraan region, killing numerous militants and disrupting their operations.
Local militias have conducted operations against Al-Shabaab in the Middle Shabelle region, killing five militants in a separate incident. The region has seen increased community resistance to Al-Shabaab’s presence and activities.
In a similar display of community solidarity, residents across Hiiraan took to the streets to show their support for the Somali National Army and local forces after a successful military operation in the village of Aboorey, where Al-Shabaab militants were repelled and their attack thwarted. Demonstrating remarkable unity, the people of Moqokori district quickly mobilized to provide essential supplies—such as food, milk, and clean drinking water—directly to frontline troops to strengthen their morale and sustain their efforts.
The killing of senior commanders is part of a sustained campaign against Al-Shabaab’s leadership. NISA forces have eliminated eight Al-Shabaab militants, including key commanders responsible for mines and rocket attacks in the Middle Shabelle region. The targeted operation struck a militant assembly point near the riverbank on the outskirts of Basra, dealing a significant blow to the militant network.
NISA conducted a planned operation in the Maxaas district of the Hiiraan region, killing three commanders and seriously wounding senior leader Mustaf Caato, who was the group’s overall commander for the so-called “fronts” in the Hiiraan region.
Somali forces have killed nearly 30 Al-Shabaab militants in airstrikes in Middle Shabelle over a 48-hour period, destroying training camps, logistics hubs, and weapons stockpiles in the villages of Gayfo, Ruun Idiris, and Ali Gaduud.
The Somali National Army, including elite Gorgor Commandos, has launched security operations in the Rage-Eelle district of the Middle Shabelle region, targeting established militant strongholds and conducting extensive mine clearance to guarantee civilian safety.
Critical Note
The killing of a senior Al-Shabaab commander by local herders represents a significant development in the struggle against the militant group, highlighting the growing willingness of communities to resist the group’s abuses. The Macawiisley movement, which has been instrumental in pushing back militant control from rural villages, demonstrates that community-led resistance can complement formal military operations.
However, the government must ensure that such acts of community resistance are accompanied by sustained security and governance improvements to prevent the group from regaining control. While the killing of Xasan Xusuleey is a tactical success, the broader campaign against Al-Shabaab continues to face significant challenges. The group has demonstrated resilience, adapting its tactics and maintaining its ability to carry out attacks despite sustained military pressure. The government must continue to support local communities and security forces to ensure that the gains made are consolidated and that the underlying grievances that fuel the insurgency are addressed.
