Arrest Attempt Turns Deadly: Two Soldiers Die in Close-Range Shooting in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU – Two soldiers were killed following a gun battle near the Nile Restaurant in Mogadishu on Monday after an attempt to arrest a man escalated into a firefight, according to local reports.

An armed soldier reportedly arrived at the premises to arrest a man working at the restaurant. The site’s security guard intervened, triggering a close-range exchange of gunfire. Both armed men were killed in the shooting. Haramcad police were later deployed to recover the bodies and secure the scene.

The elite Haramcad unit has been at the forefront of security operations in Mogadishu, with its officers frequently deployed to respond to violent incidents and maintain public order.

Rising Tensions and Security Challenges

The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the capital, where security forces have been on high alert following a series of violent incidents. In November 2022, unknown gunmen shot and killed three soldiers at Bakara market, underscoring the persistent security challenges facing the city.

Previous incidents have also highlighted the dangers of armed personnel in civilian areas, including a case in which a soldier killed a conductor over a dispute, prompting a manhunt.

Haramcad Police’s Role in Maintaining Order

The Haramcad unit, a Turkish-trained special police force, has been increasingly deployed to manage security in Mogadishu. The unit has previously been involved in deadly clashes, including an incident in January 2021 where two Haramcad officers and a militia member were killed.

Way Forward

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and authorities have not yet released official statements regarding the motive behind the arrest attempt or the identities of the deceased. The shooting near Nile Restaurant serves as a reminder of the volatile security situation in Mogadishu, where the presence of armed personnel and the proliferation of weapons continue to pose risks to public safety.
