MOGADISHU: Environment and Climate Change Minister Bashir Mohamed Jama has announced that Somalia’s federal government will intensify climate adaptation and environmental protection initiatives following an evaluation mission to Galmudug state that revealed escalating harm to communities and infrastructure. The minister conducted tours of Hobyo and El-Buur among other towns, where authorities report that climate fluctuations and environmental deterioration are progressively undermining livelihoods across central Somalia. During his visit to Hobyo, a coastal community, the minister observed neighborhoods endangered by encroaching sand dunes that have submerged houses and forced residents to relocate, an issue local administrators indicate has intensified in recent times due to climatic shifts and land deterioration. Minister Jama convened with state representatives, community figures, and residents to evaluate the extent of the destruction and immediate requirements, characterizing the circumstances as a definitive demonstration of how climate forces are transforming Somalia’s terrain and heightening exposure. He affirmed that the federal administration would collaborate with Galmudug authorities to implement specialized adaptation strategies and mitigation projects designed to safeguard populated areas and provide assistance to affected populations. According to officials, the assessment visit will contribute to synchronized federal and state approaches centered on establishing enduring ecological sustainability and protecting means of subsistence in climate-affected zones of central Somalia.
