MOGADISHU – The Governor of Banaadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu, Hassan Mohamed Hussein Muungaab, officially opened the renovated and upgraded Shangani District headquarters on Monday, in a move designed to enhance administrative efficiency and improve public service delivery in the historic district.
During the inauguration ceremony, Mayor Muungaab stated that reconstructing and modernizing government institutions is crucial for improving community services and building public trust. He emphasized that the Banaadir Regional Administration is dedicated to expanding and upgrading public service facilities, adding that this initiative is part of returning taxpayers’ contributions to the residents of the Somali capital. Banadir leaders have also united to fast-track Somalia’s National ID rollout, with Mayor Muungaab participating in high-level meetings aimed at strengthening identity management and public service delivery.
The newly renovated building replaces facilities that had been non-functional for decades. The renovation is part of a broader effort by the Banadir administration to regenerate key government centers in Mogadishu. Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre recently inaugurated the rehabilitation and construction of the Ministry of Interior headquarters – a building that had faced 33 years of neglect – as part of the same push to restore public institutions.
Eid Appeals and Security Improvements
The mayor also appealed to organizations involved in Eid livestock slaughter activities and financially capable individuals to support and help vulnerable communities during the upcoming Eid al-Adha celebrations. The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) recently coordinated the distribution of sacrificial meat to more than 148,040 families during a nationwide effort for the 2025 Eid al-Adha holiday.
Mayor Muungaab further commended recent security improvements in Mogadishu and encouraged greater collaboration between the public and security agencies to maintain stability. The mayor has been leading high-level security meetings aimed at intensifying measures to protect the capital and curb criminal activities that endanger public stability. The city has seen a progressive reopening of major roads that had been closed for security reasons, with officials describing the development as a new chapter for Mogadishu after years of terrorism threats.
Broader Modernisation Efforts Underway
The Banadir administration has also launched the “SINNAAN” project to modernize Mogadishu’s infrastructure. The SINNAAN project focuses on strengthening basic infrastructure, improving urban planning, and enhancing the capacity of engineering departments in Banadir to build a modern and sustainable system, accelerating the delivery of public services across the capital.
In addition, the Banadir Regional Administration has implemented a series of significant public financial management reforms, enhancing transparency and accountability for over four million residents.
The inauguration event was attended by Somalia’s Minister of Family and Human Rights Development, Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi; Deputy Minister of Public Works, Mohamed Hussein Gaaraxo; Banaadir Regional Administration Deputy Governor for Social Affairs and Public Awareness, Abdiaziz Osman Mohamed; the Shangani District Commissioner; traditional elders; regional directors; and other distinguished guests.
