Puntland Police Arrest Suspect in Killing of Jariiban District Police Commander

GAROWE – Puntland police have announced the arrest of a man suspected of killing the police commander of the Jariiban district in the Mudug region, in a swift operation that underscores the regional administration’s intensified efforts to curb illegal weapons and armed violence.

The suspect, identified as Ibrahim Ahmed Kooshin, was apprehended inside Jariiban town shortly after fleeing the scene of the attack, according to Puntland police officials. The operation was carried out in coordination with local elders, whose cooperation was instrumental in the arrest.

Commander’s Role and the Attack

The victim, Major Guuleed Cabdulqaadir Kadleeye, served as the police commander of the Jariiban district and had been actively involved in countering illegal arms trafficking and piracy networks operating along the Mudug coastline. His death has sent shockwaves through the local community, with residents and officials alike mourning a commander described as having played a visible role in maintaining security in the district.

Puntland’s Security Crackdown

The arrest comes at a time when Puntland authorities have been stepping up efforts to address security challenges across the region. Puntland’s police chief has issued stern warnings against individuals carrying weapons without authorisation, as part of a broader campaign to curb the proliferation of armed groups and restore public confidence in law enforcement. Residents in Garowe have reported a visible increase in patrols, with checkpoints set up on key roads and markets.

The Mudug region, where Jariiban is located, has experienced inter-clan conflicts in recent times, including deadly clashes in 2024 that displaced over 26,000 people. Puntland authorities have been working to mediate these disputes and maintain stability in the area.

Judicial Process and Ongoing Investigations

Puntland police have confirmed that the suspect will be transferred to the relevant judicial authorities to face the full force of the law. Investigations into the killing are ongoing, with authorities collecting all evidence related to the incident.

The Puntland Police Force has a track record of pursuing suspects across borders when necessary. In a separate case, the main suspect in the murder of Mohamed Ahmed Farah was extradited from Kenya and handed over to Puntland Police. The Puntland police chief has previously ordered the arrest of suspects involved in the killing of two police officers, demonstrating the force’s commitment to bringing perpetrators to justice.

Way Forward

The arrest of the suspect in the killing of Major Guuleed Kadleeye marks a significant step toward accountability and justice for the slain commander and his family. As Puntland continues to strengthen its security operations, the cooperation between security forces and local communities, particularly traditional elders, will remain essential to maintaining stability and combating the threats of illegal arms and armed violence across the region.
