Somali-Dutch Entrepreneur Mohamed Midnimo’s Persistence Pays Off as Flame-Grilled Chain Launches in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU – South African flame-grilled chicken franchise Galito’s has officially opened its first location in Somalia, marking the entry of another international brand into the country’s growing hospitality and food service sector. The milestone comes after years of persistent effort by Somali-Dutch entrepreneur Mohamed Bashir Osman (Midnimo), former CEO of Feeto Foods Limited and now Board Member, who worked tirelessly to bring the franchise to his ancestral homeland.

The restaurant chain announced the opening on social media, congratulating the local team and thanking everyone who played a part in bringing Galito’s to Somalia. The company stated it is proud to welcome Somalia to the Galito’s family as its brand continues to grow across borders.

Mohamed Bashir Osman (Midnimo)’s Years of Effort and Achievement

Mohamed Bashir Osman (Midnimo), a Somali-Dutch citizen and entrepreneur, former CEO of Feeto Foods Limited and now Board Member, has been working for many years to bring Galito’s to Somalia. His efforts reflect a broader commitment to showcasing the positive side of Somalia and attracting international investment to the country. Midnimo has been actively involved in projects that highlight Somalia’s potential, including producing videos that show the beauty of Mogadishu’s Liido Beach and everyday life in the capital.

In recent years, Midnimo has been among a group of young Somali-Dutch citizens who have visited their ancestral homeland, documenting the reality of life in Mogadishu. Their video footage, shot on the scenic Liido Beach, has helped counter negative perceptions of Somalia as a country consumed solely by conflict and instability.

Midnimo recently won the Business Of The Year Award at the 3rd International Somali Awards held in London. He grew up in the Netherlands and studied graphic design, working as a community educator there before becoming a successful entrepreneur. Additionally, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Nairobi has appointed him as the Honorary Consul in Mogadishu – the first-ever Honorary Consul in Somalia, representing Dutch interests from Mogadishu. As the founder of marketing bureau Daauus and co-founder of the Holland House Mogadishu (Guriga Oranje), Midnimo brings significant experience to this diplomatic role.

Countering Negative Perceptions

Midnimo has been part of a growing movement among diaspora Somalis to reconnect with their homeland and challenge mainstream media narratives. His video work has shown that people are carrying on with their lives in Mogadishu, with access to internet cafes, electricity, and social media. The footage demonstrates that the situation on the ground is far less grim than many in the West imagine.

The successful opening of Galito’s in Somalia represents a tangible outcome of these efforts to build bridges between the diaspora and the homeland. Midnimo’s persistence in pursuing the franchise deal demonstrates that international brands can successfully establish operations in Somalia with proper local partnerships and determination.

Newest Territory for Growing Franchise

Galito’s, which specializes in Portuguese-style flame-grilled chicken, has expanded across multiple countries in Africa and beyond since its founding in South Africa. The Somalia opening represents the latest step in the brand’s continental expansion strategy.

The company’s announcement described the launch as an exciting milestone and expressed confidence in the team’s success. Galito’s said it looks forward to serving the local community its signature flame-grilled flavor, which defines the brand’s identity across its international locations.

Sign of Growing International Investment

The arrival of Galito’s in Somalia follows a pattern of increased international business interest in the country. Despite ongoing security challenges, Mogadishu has seen a gradual expansion of retail, hospitality, and service sector businesses in recent years.

International hotel chains, telecommunications companies, and now food franchises have established a presence in the capital, reflecting confidence among some investors in Somalia’s long-term economic potential. The reopening and renovation of iconic hotels, along with the growth of shopping centers and restaurants in Mogadishu, signal a slow but steady recovery of urban commercial life.

The Role of the Somali Diaspora

Midnimo’s success in bringing Galito’s to Somalia highlights the crucial role that the Somali diaspora plays in the country’s economic development. According to the World Bank, an estimated US$1.3 billion flowed into Somalia from the worldwide diaspora, equal to 24 percent of GDP. A 2023 Clingendael Institute study notes that investment from the Somali diaspora ranges from USD 5,000 to USD 100,000, with the majority between USD 5,000 and 50,000, and that an estimated 80 percent of start-up capital for Somali small and medium-sized enterprises comes from the diaspora.

Challenges and Opportunities in the Somali Market

Operating a food service business in Somalia presents unique challenges, including supply chain logistics, import regulations, and security considerations. However, the growing Somali diaspora and an emerging middle class have created demand for diverse dining options.

The success of other food and beverage establishments in Mogadishu has demonstrated that international brands can thrive with proper local partnerships and community engagement. Galito’s entry into the market suggests confidence in the country’s gradual economic stabilization.

Job Creation and Local Economic Impact

New restaurant openings typically generate employment opportunities for local workers, including kitchen staff, service personnel, management positions, and supply chain roles. The Galito’s Somalia location is expected to contribute to local employment and skills development in the hospitality sector.

The franchise’s supply chain requirements may also create opportunities for local food suppliers and logistics providers, though specific details about the restaurant’s sourcing arrangements have not been disclosed.

International Brand Expansion Trends

Galito’s joins a growing list of international food brands that have expanded into Somalia. Other franchises have opened locations in Mogadishu in recent years, serving both local residents and the international community present in the capital.

The trend reflects broader patterns of economic normalization, as Somalia continues to rebuild after decades of civil conflict. International observers have noted that the return of recognizable global brands often serves as a barometer for improving business confidence in post-conflict markets.

Way Forward for the New Restaurant

The Galito’s Somalia team has not yet announced specific details regarding menu offerings, pricing, or operating hours. The company’s social media announcement expressed optimism about the venture’s future, stating: “Here’s to bold ambitions, lasting success, and a future fuelled by flavour.”

Local customers and members of the diaspora are expected to welcome the new dining option, which offers an alternative to existing restaurants in the capital. Whether Galito’s will expand to additional locations within Somalia remains unclear and likely depends on the performance of the initial outlet.
