Defence Minister Fiqi and Army Chief Visit Ceeldheer to Assess Security Operations in Galgadud

CEELDHEER – The Minister of Defence of the Federal Government of Somalia, Ambassador Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, accompanied by the Commander of the Somali National Army (SNA), Major General Ibrahim Mohamed Mahmoud, arrived in the Ceeldheer district of the Galgadud region on Sunday for a working visit to assess ongoing security operations and the progress of counter-insurgency efforts in the area.

The visit is part of the government’s broader strategy to monitor and accelerate military campaigns against Al-Shabaab, which has maintained a presence in parts of central Somalia for years. Ceeldheer, a coastal district in Galmudug State, has been a focal point of operations as government forces seek to consolidate control and stabilise liberated areas.[reference:0].

Minister Fiqi has previously highlighted the importance of institutional reforms in strengthening the national security architecture, emphasising that such reforms are critical for creating an integrated and effective security apparatus capable of countering militant threats[reference:1]. The visit to Ceeldheer comes as the government intensifies its campaign against Islamist militants to weaken their operational capacity and stabilise central regions[reference:2].

Assessing Frontline Operations

During their tour, the delegation held meetings with military commanders leading frontline operations, receiving briefings on the security situation, the progress of ongoing offensives, and the logistical and operational challenges facing troops in the region. The visit also provided an opportunity to assess the needs of the forces engaged in the fight against Al-Shabaab.

Galmudug forces have recently reported success in their operations, including the surrender of a high-ranking Al-Shabaab commander, Abdirahman Talxo Shuuke, who defected to regional forces amid sustained military pressure and internal fragmentation within the militant group[reference:3]. The defection highlights the effectiveness of ongoing security operations in the Galgadud region.

Commending Troops and Reinforcing Commitment

Minister Fiqi and General Mahmoud praised the bravery and dedication of the soldiers stationed on the frontlines, encouraging them to intensify their efforts to eliminate anti-peace elements and defend Somali citizens. The visit was intended to boost morale and reaffirm the government’s commitment to ensuring the success of military operations.

General Mahmoud has previously chaired strategic meetings focused on accelerating military operations and advancing force development, underscoring the importance of coordination and unified efforts to maintain security in the country[reference:4]. His presence in Ceeldheer reflects the army leadership’s direct engagement with frontline units.

Security Challenges in Galgadud and Ceeldheer

The Galgadud region has been a longstanding battleground for control between government forces and Al-Shabaab[reference:5]. Ceeldheer, in particular, has experienced periodic militant activity, making it a key focus of military operations. The district was previously under Al-Shabaab control[reference:6], and government forces have been working to secure the area and prevent the group’s resurgence.

The visit by the Defence Minister and the Army Chief signals the federal government’s determination to maintain momentum in the campaign to eliminate Al-Shabaab from remaining strongholds in central Somalia.

Way Forward

The high-level visit to Ceeldheer underscores the government’s focus on accelerating military operations and improving the conditions of troops engaged in counter-insurgency efforts. As the federal government continues its push to stabilise the region, sustained coordination between federal and regional forces will be crucial to securing lasting peace and preventing the resurgence of militant activity in Galgadud and the wider Galmudug State.
