Foreign Ministry Expresses Deep Regret Over US Decision to Deny Entry to Somali Referee Omar Artan

MOGADISHU – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia has expressed deep regret over the decision by United States authorities to deny entry to Somali international referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, the Confederation of African Football Referee of the Year 2025 and Somalia’s most accomplished sporting figure.

In an official press release issued on June 10, 2026, the Ministry confirmed that the Federal Government of Somalia undertook diplomatic efforts with the relevant authorities in support of Artan’s travel to the United States for the FIFA World Cup. Regrettably, these efforts did not result in a favorable outcome.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia expresses its deep regret over the decision by the authorities of the United States of America to deny entry to Somali international referee Mr. Omar Abdulkadir Artan,” the statement read.

The Ministry described Artan as a source of immense national pride, noting that his success continues to inspire Somali youth and demonstrates that talent, commitment, and perseverance can lead to international excellence.

Diplomatic Efforts Prove Unsuccessful

The Ministry revealed that it had engaged in diplomatic efforts with the relevant authorities in an attempt to secure Artan’s entry, but these initiatives proved futile. The case has drawn attention to the challenges faced by athletes from developing nations in accessing international competitions, as well as the broader pattern of discrimination against African nations under US travel restrictions.

The Government of Somalia remains immensely proud of Artan’s achievements and contributions, the statement emphasized. “His success continues to inspire Somali youth and demonstrates that talent, commitment, and perseverance can lead to international excellence,” the Ministry said.

FTL Somalia has extensively analyzed the double standards exposed by this case, drawing comparisons between the treatment of Artan and FIFA’s decisive action against Indonesia, which lost its hosting rights for refusing to allow the Israeli team to participate in the Under-20 World Cup.

Artan Returns Home to Hero’s Welcome

The Ministry confirmed that Artan has safely returned home and will continue to carry out his national and international responsibilities with the same dedication and professionalism that have defined his career. Upon his arrival in Mogadishu, Artan received a warm welcome from government officials, football federation representatives, and hundreds of cheering supporters.

The Ministry also extended its sincere appreciation to all brotherly countries, individuals, institutions, sporting bodies, and well-wishers who expressed solidarity and support during this period.

Government to Seek Further Clarification from US

The Federal Republic of Somalia will continue engaging with relevant partners to seek further clarification regarding this matter and to safeguard the dignity and rights of its citizens, the Ministry stated.

US Customs and Border Protection has maintained that Artan was deemed inadmissible due to unspecified “vetting concerns,” but has refused to provide additional details about the decision. The Trump administration has defended the move, citing national security protocols.

Broader Context of Discrimination

As detailed in FTL Somalia’s analysis, the rejection of Artan must be viewed against the backdrop of President Donald Trump’s derogatory comments about Somalia and its people. In December 2025, Trump stated: “With Somalia, which is barely a country, you know, they have no anything. They just run around killing each other. There’s no structure.”

In June 2025, Trump placed a full entry ban covering 12 countries, including Somalia. While the order carves out an exemption for World Cup athletes and staff, border officers retain wide discretion to turn people back, a loophole that effectively neutralizes any protection for officials from banned nations.

Somali People Stand with Omar Artan

The Ministry concluded its statement with a direct message to the referee: “Welcome home, Mr. Omar Abdulkadir Artan. The Somali people stand proudly with you and celebrate your remarkable achievements.”

Artan, who was named the Confederation of African Football’s Best Male Referee for 2025, had been selected as one of FIFA’s World Cup match officials and was poised to become the first Somali referee to officiate at football’s premier international tournament.

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Artan’s professional development and ensuring that Somali athletes receive fair treatment in international competitions. The Ministry will continue to engage with relevant partners to seek further clarification regarding the matter and to safeguard the dignity and rights of its citizens.
