MOGADISHU: Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama presided over a formal transition ceremony at the Ministry of Information on Tuesday, marking the official handover between incoming Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Abdifatah Qasim Mohamud and his predecessor Daud Aweis Jama.
The Deputy Prime Minister called on the new minister to maintain transparency and efficiency in his duties and extended best wishes for success in the new role. He also acknowledged the outgoing minister’s accomplishments during his tenure leading the ministry. The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the Ministry of Information as one of the critical institutions supporting government operations and commended ministry employees for their valuable service to the nation.
The handover follows the appointment of Abdifatah Qasim Mohamud by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on May 6, 2026. The selection adhered to constitutional provisions and followed consultations with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, with the Prime Minister calling on the new minister to perform his duties with diligence and commitment.
Outgoing minister Daud Aweis Jama had been actively engaged in international and domestic media diplomacy. He recently convened a meeting with UN Deputy Special Representative George Conway to strengthen media and humanitarian collaboration. He also led efforts to enhance the capacity of journalists, launching a two-day training session on hate speech prevention in election reporting just days before his departure.
The transition occurs amid broader government efforts to streamline cabinet performance and as Somalia approaches a pivotal electoral period. The Ministry of Information is expected to continue spearheading strategies to counter disinformation, support press freedom, and promote Somalia’s cultural heritage under its new leadership. The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to creating a media environment that enables professionals to perform their duties with integrity, responsibility, and professionalism.
