US Africa Command Strikes Al-Shabaab 90km Northwest of Kismayo Amid Regional Counter-Terrorism Push

MOGADISHU – The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has confirmed it conducted an airstrike targeting Al-Shabaab in Somalia’s Jubaland regional state on July 8, 2026, as part of ongoing counter-terrorism operations in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia.

According to a statement released by AFRICOM on July 10, the strike occurred approximately 90 kilometres northwest of the port city of Kismayo. The command did not provide specific details about the units or assets involved, citing operational security concerns. No casualty figures or battle damage assessments were released.

The United States has significantly ramped up its aerial campaign in Somalia, with nearly 50 airstrikes conducted in the first quarter of 2026 alone, targeting extremist organisations operating in the Horn of Africa. The July 8 strike was one of four such operations carried out between July 3 and July 8, according to AFRICOM statements.

A Series of Strikes in Southern Somalia

The July 8 strike follows a pattern of intensified US military action in southern Somalia. AFRICOM conducted strikes on July 3 in the vicinity of Farsooley, approximately 90 kilometres west of Mogadishu; on July 4 near Jamame, approximately 60 kilometres northeast of Kismayo; and on July 5 near Juba, approximately 75 kilometres northwest of Kismayo. Each statement noted that AFRICOM, alongside the Federal Government of Somalia and Somali Armed Forces, continues to take action to degrade Al-Shabaab’s ability to threaten US forces and citizens abroad.

The airstrikes come amid intensified ground operations by Somali forces. On July 9, the elite Danab Commandos, operating in coordination with Jubbaland security forces, conducted a planned operation against Al-Shabaab in the Baqdaad area of the Badhaadhe district in Lower Juba, killing two senior commanders and 14 fighters, and capturing two additional militants alive.

AFRICOM’s Stated Objective

In its statement, AFRICOM said the strike was carried out “in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia” and that the command “continues to take action to degrade al-Shabaab’s ability to threaten U.S. forces and our citizens abroad.” The command did not immediately provide casualty figures from the strike.

Somalia has faced years of insecurity, with Al-Shabaab remaining one of the main threats to the federal government and security forces. The al-Qaida-linked group has waged an insurgency against the Somali government and international forces since at least 2007.

Way Forward

The July 8 airstrike reflects the ongoing US military commitment to supporting Somali counter-terrorism efforts, even as the broader political crisis in Somalia continues. The Danab ground operation the following day underscores the growing capacity of Somali special forces, which have been trained and equipped with US support. As both aerial and ground operations intensify, the effectiveness of these campaigns in degrading Al-Shabaab’s operational capacity will remain a key metric for the success of Somalia’s counter-terrorism strategy.
