Al-Shabaab Militant Surrenders to Somali National Army in Lower Shabelle

MOGADISHU: An Al-Shabaab militant identified as Ali Mohamed Colow has surrendered to the Somali National Army forces stationed in the Mubaarak area of the Lower Shabelle region after fleeing ongoing military operations carried out by the National Army in the Ugunji area.

The militant, who surrendered with his AK-47 rifle and ammunition, stated that he had previously fought alongside Al-Shabaab militants in the Hiiraan, Lower Shabelle, and Middle Shabelle regions. He added that he was recently deployed to Ugunji as reinforcement but decided to surrender after failing to withstand the sustained military offensives conducted by the Somali National Army.

Conditions Within Al-Shabaab Deteriorating

Colow further revealed that conditions within the group had become increasingly difficult, with militants living in constant fear due to ongoing operations targeting hideouts used by Al-Shabaab leaders and fighters. According to him, the intensified pressure from the National Army ultimately forced him to surrender. A recent assessment from a defecting Al-Shabaab commander in Galgaduud indicates that militant fighters are “increasingly dispersed” and experiencing severe internal fragmentation, attributing this collapse to sustained pressure from the Somali National Army and local forces.

Intensified Military Operations in Lower Shabelle

The defection follows intensified military operations in the Lower Shabelle region. The Somali National Army, in close collaboration with international security partners, recently conducted a precisely coordinated airstrike in the Ugunji sector, destroying a militant facility, eliminating six identified Al-Shabaab fighters, and destroying a large amount of tactical weapons, communication devices, and logistical supplies.

A major 72-hour security operation across the Buulo Cabdalla corridor between Mubaarak and Ugunji resulted in the death of 22 Al-Shabaab militants, including their regional commander, Cabdiraxmaan Jeeri, who was responsible for orchestrating systematic intimidation campaigns and summary killings against civilian populations.

Targeted Strikes Against Leadership

A precision operation in the Ugunji area eliminated Suleyman Omar Fidow, the supreme commander of Al-Shabaab’s suicide bomber divisions, who was being positioned to assume absolute command of the explosives and militant indoctrination divisions. Elite Gorgor Commandos also apprehended a senior Al-Shabaab leader, Salad Moalim Osman Abdiyow, in a targeted raid, dismantling militant leadership across several surrounding settlements in the Lower Shabelle region.

Stabilization and Humanitarian Efforts

Following military successes, stabilization efforts are underway. The Somali National Army’s elite Gorgor Commando First Unit, alongside Turkish military advisers from the TURKSOM training mission, carried out a major humanitarian relief operation in the Mubarak district, distributing essential food supplies to vulnerable families as part of the Federal Government’s “Liberation and Stability” approach.

The 143rd Unit of the 14th October Brigade has also deployed engineering equipment to clear the vital transport corridor linking Mubaarak and Awdheegle, actively preventing extremist groups from utilizing natural cover to launch ambushes and ensuring the unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid and trade goods across the volatile area.

The federal government continues to emphasize that counter-terrorism operations will persist until all militant hideouts are cleared and lasting security is established for the Somali population.
