BELEDWEYNE – Security forces in the central Somali city of Beledweyne thwarted a planned terrorist attack on Saturday night, killing one suspected Al-Shabaab operative and capturing another alive in the Hawo-Tako neighborhood, officials said.
A statement published by state media said the operation prevented two “Khawarij plotters” from carrying out an attack in the city. Security forces shot and killed one suspect during the confrontation, while the second was taken into custody. The military later displayed the body of the slain suspect and the captured man in the city, a move officials said was part of efforts to strengthen security and deter further attacks.
Beledweyne has repeatedly been targeted by Al-Shabaab due to its strategic military and logistical importance, with the group launching a multi-pronged attack on the city in January 2026. Local authorities have since increased patrols and maintained a high state of alert.
Community Cooperation Proves Decisive
Liban Omar Hassan, spokesman for the Hiiraan regional administration, said information provided by local residents played a key role in preventing the alleged attack. “We call on the residents of Beledweyne to continue cooperating with the security forces, and action will be taken against anyone who tries to cause trouble in the city,” Hassan said.
The Somali National Army has been conducting security operations in eastern Hiiraan as part of a broader national initiative to eliminate extremist fighters and secure recently liberated zones.
Intelligence-Led Operations Intensify
The operation is the latest in a series of security actions in Beledweyne, where authorities have stepped up intelligence-led operations in recent months to prevent attacks and dismantle militant networks. Security analysts say timely intelligence from local communities has become an increasingly important component of Somalia’s counterinsurgency strategy, complementing military operations aimed at disrupting Al-Shabaab cells before they can carry out attacks.
Hiiraan region has been grappling with a dire humanitarian crisis, with over 60,000 people displaced due to intensified conflict and insecurity. The latest security operation comes as authorities work to stabilize the region and prevent further displacement.
Way Forward
Investigations into the captured suspect are ongoing, with officials seeking to determine whether the individuals were linked to a wider militant network operating in the region. Security forces remain on high alert and have pledged to continue pursuing anyone threatening the safety of the city. Al-Shabaab has not publicly commented on the government’s claims.
