MOGADISHU – The Governor of the Banadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu, Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Muungaab), has held a meeting with the Mayor of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, Nadia Mohamed, who is currently on an official visit to the Somali capital, to discuss strengthening ties between the two cities and exploring areas of mutual cooperation.
The meeting focused on enhancing cooperative relations between Mogadishu and St. Louis Park, exchanging expertise in local governance, improving public service delivery, and fostering collaboration between the two municipalities. Mayor Muungaab, who warmly received Mayor Mohamed, congratulated her on her historic achievement in becoming the first Somali, Muslim, and Black woman elected mayor of St. Louis Park.
Mayor Mohamed made history in November 2023 when she was elected as the first Black, first Somali, and first Muslim mayor of St. Louis Park, a milestone that was widely celebrated in both the United States and Somalia. Her election was seen as a significant achievement for the Somali diaspora in America.
Strengthening Diaspora Engagement and Local Governance
Mayor Muungaab described Mohamed’s success as an inspiration to the Somali community, particularly for women and youth, and a testament to the growing role of Somalis in leadership and public service. He noted that her visit represents a bridge between the diaspora and the homeland, highlighting the importance of engaging Somalis abroad in the country’s reconstruction and development.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has previously called on the Somali diaspora to play a greater role in the nation’s development, urging them to bolster support for the armed forces and participate in Somalia’s ongoing democratization process.
The Federal Government has maintained a sustained commitment to engaging the Somali diaspora as a strategic partner in national recovery, with high-level officials holding meetings with diaspora communities in various countries to update them on the country’s progress and ongoing development.
A Symbol of Diaspora Success
During her visit, Mayor Mohamed has met with senior Somali leaders, including President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and has toured various institutions in Mogadishu. She has praised the progress made in the capital since her last visit and has expressed her commitment to strengthening ties between Somalia and the United States, as well as enhancing the role of the diaspora in the country’s reconstruction.
Mohamed’s historic election victory was widely covered in Somali media and has inspired many in the diaspora to pursue leadership roles in their adopted countries.
Commitment to Cooperation
Mayor Mohamed expressed her gratitude to Mayor Muungaab for the warm welcome and hospitality. She also praised the efforts of the Mogadishu local government in improving public services, enhancing the city’s aesthetics, and advancing reconstruction efforts in the capital. She reaffirmed her commitment to strengthening ties and cooperation between the two cities.
Way Forward
The meeting between the two mayors reflects the growing importance of diaspora engagement in Somalia’s development and the efforts of the Federal Government and regional administrations to harness the expertise and resources of Somalis abroad. As Mogadishu continues its reconstruction and state-building efforts, partnerships with diaspora leaders like Mayor Mohamed are expected to play a key role in advancing local governance, public service delivery, and economic development.
