Somalia’s Defence Ministry Says Perpetrators of Flag Incident Identified, Will Face Justice

MOGADISHU – The Ministry of Defence of the Federal Government of Somalia has announced that all individuals involved in the recent incident in which Somali National Army uniforms were used to desecrate the flag of the United States have been identified and taken into custody, and will face legal proceedings.

In a statement released on Sunday, the ministry confirmed that ongoing investigations had established the identities of those responsible for the act, which was captured in a viral video that sparked widespread condemnation. The ministry said those detained would be handed over to judicial authorities to face appropriate legal action.

“The Ministry of Defence confirms that all individuals involved in the incident in which the dignity of the Somali National Army and the flag of the United States were violated have been apprehended. Legal measures will be taken against them, and they will be referred to the relevant judicial authorities,” the statement read.

The Ministry had previously detained several individuals following the circulation of the video, describing the conduct as “unacceptable” and inconsistent with the values and discipline of the Somali National Army.

Government Warns Against Further Violations

The ministry also issued a stern warning against any actions that undermine the honour, dignity, and reputation of the Somali National Army, stating that such acts would not be tolerated. The ministry said any future violations targeting the dignity of the armed forces or the symbols of Somalia’s partner nations would be met with decisive legal action.

“The Ministry of Defence strongly warns against any act that undermines the honour, dignity, and reputation of the Somali National Army. Any violation of the dignity of the armed forces or the symbols of Somalia’s partner nations will not be tolerated,” the statement said.

The incident comes at a time when Somalia and the United States have been reaffirming their defence ties, with Minister of Defence Ahmed Moallim Fiqi meeting with U.S. Ambassador Richard Riley to underscore the strong bilateral defence partnership and shared commitment to regional stability.

Reaffirmation of Partnership with the United States

The ministry’s swift action reflects the federal government’s awareness of the importance of maintaining strong ties with the United States, which has been a key security partner for Somalia. Washington has supported Somali counter-terrorism operations, provided military training, and contributed to state-building efforts for decades.

High-level meetings between Somali and U.S. military officials have centered on enhancing joint operations and continued collaboration in the fight against Al-Shabaab and ISIS.

U.S. Investment in Somali Security

The United States has invested billions of dollars in Somalia’s security sector over the years, training elite units such as the Danab commandos and providing critical support for counter-terrorism operations. The flag incident had the potential to strain relations at a sensitive time, making the government’s response all the more significant.

The Somali National Army Chief has met with U.S. defence officials to enhance security collaboration, with discussions focusing on improving joint operations against terrorism, as well as addressing piracy and other emerging security challenges.

Way Forward

The swift identification and arrest of those involved in the flag incident demonstrate the government’s determination to uphold discipline within the armed forces and protect its international partnerships. The Ministry of Defence’s commitment to legal accountability signals that such acts will not be tolerated, as Somalia continues to rely on U.S. support for its counter-terrorism operations and institutional development.
