TUNIS: Somalia has expanded its diplomatic presence in North Africa with the appointment of a non-resident ambassador to Tunisia. Ambassador Yusuf Ahmed Hassan, who is currently serving as Somalia’s envoy to Algeria, formally presented his credentials to Tunisian Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Alnafti during a ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tunis on Thursday.
The event, described by officials as having taken place in a warm and friendly atmosphere, highlighted the longstanding fraternal relations between the two nations. Ambassador Yusuf’s appointment follows his earlier credential presentation as Ambassador to Algeria in April 2025. Yusuf Ahmed Hassan, Somalia’s newly appointed Ambassador to Algeria, officially presented his diplomatic credentials to Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, marking the commencement of his mission to strengthen ties between the two nations. This move is part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to rejuvenate and enhance its historical connections with the Maghreb region, fostering stronger geopolitical and economic partnerships.
Following the credential presentation, diplomatic teams from both sides held in-depth talks aimed at expanding bilateral cooperation across multiple strategic sectors. The discussions centered on creating practical frameworks for mutual advantage in areas including cross-border trade, educational exchanges, and broader economic development. The representatives also stressed the importance of coordinating approaches on agricultural advancement, livestock exports, and regional security initiatives. This comprehensive approach indicates a mutual readiness to transform diplomatic relations into concrete socioeconomic benefits for citizens of both nations.
Ambassador Yusuf has been actively engaged in strengthening Somalia’s ties with North Africa. The Ambassador recently met with senior officials from Algeria’s Council of Nation (Senate) to enhance parliamentary relations and establish stronger legislative connections, with talks focusing on the creation of a strategic friendship committee for the upper legislative chambers. Somalia’s Federal Government has been steadily broadening its diplomatic outreach across the continent. The government has formally established diplomatic representation in Malawi with the appointment of Ambassador Ilyas Ali Hassan as its non-resident ambassador to the southern African nation, reaffirming Somalia’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations in trade, security, education, and regional cooperation.
The government has also expanded its diplomatic footprint in Asia. Somalia’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Sheekhnuur Maxamed Hassan, formally presented his letters of credence to Bangladesh’s President, confirming his role as non-resident Ambassador to that nation. These consistent diplomatic initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to deepening Somalia’s international partnerships and advancing its foreign policy objectives of economic integration, mutual cooperation, and sustainable development.
