MOGADISHU: Somalia’s Acting Ambassador to Iraq, Abdifatah Sheikh Ahmed, has delivered an official congratulatory message from President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to Iraq’s newly appointed President, Nizar Aamidi. The ceremony took place at the Al-Salam Palace in Baghdad, where the ambassador conveyed the Somali leader’s warm wishes and a commitment to deepening bilateral relations.
President Hassan Sheikh’s message congratulated President Aamidi on assuming office and expressed hope for success during his tenure. The Somali leader highlighted the longstanding fraternal ties between Somalia and Iraq, emphasizing the importance of expanding cooperation in both political and economic sectors. He also voiced a desire to align the two countries’ strategic positions on shared interests to enhance regional stability. President Aamidi, in turn, asked the ambassador to extend his gratitude to President Hassan Sheikh and reaffirmed Baghdad’s commitment to developing relations with Mogadishu, pledging to broaden mutual cooperation for the benefit of both nations and their citizens.
The diplomatic exchange builds on a series of recent engagements between Somalia and Iraq. Earlier this year, Somalia’s Foreign Minister held talks with Iraqi officials in Baghdad to enhance political and security cooperation, reflecting a mutual desire to bolster ties. Iraq has consistently voiced support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, including at multilateral forums, aligning with the principles of non-interference and mutual respect.
The appointment of a new Iraqi president has offered both nations an opportunity to reinvigorate cooperation. Ambassador Abdifatah Sheikh Ahmed presented his credentials to Iraqi authorities earlier this year, formalizing his role as Somalia’s top envoy in Baghdad. Since then, the two countries have explored avenues for collaboration in trade, education, and security. The latest exchange of congratulations underscores a shared vision for peace and development in the region.
Both governments have expressed optimism that the strengthening relationship will yield tangible benefits, including increased diplomatic coordination, economic partnerships, and joint efforts to address regional challenges. The Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the exchange as “a testament to the enduring friendship between Somalia and Iraq” and reiterated its commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation in all fields.
