Somalia and Norway Pledge Stronger Diplomatic Ties in Mogadishu Meeting

MOGADISHU — The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Abdisalam Abdi Ali, has held a bilateral meeting with Einar Rystad, the Special Envoy of the Norwegian Government to Somalia, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Mogadishu.

The two officials discussed strengthening relations between Somalia and Norway, with particular focus on advancing political and diplomatic cooperation. They also reviewed issues of mutual interest to both countries.

Both officials reaffirmed their commitment to developing and strengthening cooperation and relations between the two countries.

Norway has maintained a long-standing partnership with Somalia, supporting security sector reforms, humanitarian assistance, and state-building initiatives.

Deepening Somalia-Norway Relations

Norway has been a consistent partner in Somalia’s state-building and development efforts, providing support across multiple sectors including governance, humanitarian assistance, and peacebuilding. The meeting between Minister Abdisalam and Special Envoy Rystad reflects the continued engagement between the two countries.

Earlier engagements between Somali officials and Norway’s Special Envoy have underscored the need for a new approach to rebuilding the Somali state, with discussions focusing on strengthening the partnership in development and peacebuilding.

SoDMA has called for stronger cooperation with Norway on humanitarian response and sustainable development, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in addressing urgent humanitarian needs.

Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama previously held a high-level meeting with Norwegian Ambassador Gunnar Holm to strengthen the longstanding bilateral partnership, focusing on enhancing cooperation in development, humanitarian assistance, peacebuilding, and institutional reform.

The Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation has also held talks with Norway’s Chargé d’Affaires on strengthening bilateral collaboration on stabilization efforts and reconciliation programs in Somalia.

SoDMA Commissioner Mahamuud Moallim hosted a high-level delegation from Norway’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the National Emergency Operations Center, focusing on the rapidly deteriorating drought situation and Norway’s continued humanitarian support.

SoDMA has also appealed for improved relations with Norway, with Commissioner Moallim asking Norway to help the agency accomplish its mandate to the people of Somalia.

Norway’s support has extended to education as well. Somalia’s Minister of Education has held talks with Norway’s State Minister for International Development in Oslo, focusing on education and development initiatives aimed at empowering Somali youth.

Somalia’s foreign policy has been focused on strengthening diplomatic ties with international partners, and the meeting with Norway’s Special Envoy is part of broader efforts to expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

While the meeting between Minister Abdisalam and Special Envoy Rystad reflects the ongoing diplomatic engagement between Somalia and Norway, the effectiveness of this cooperation will depend on concrete action.
