LONDON: The Vice President of Galmudug State, Ali Dahir Eid, was warmly received in the British capital as part of a working tour of Europe. During the visit, he met with officials from the Somali Embassy in London as well as members of the Somali diaspora, updating them on the current situation in Somalia and recent developments in Galmudug and the nation as a whole. The vice president also officially opened a new community office in London, describing the initiative as a significant step towards strengthening the relationship between the diaspora and the government. He called on community members to foster greater cooperation among themselves and to maintain their support for the Somali people and the federal government.
The trip builds on the regional administration’s ongoing engagement with international partners and the diaspora. Galmudug has previously signed an agreement with a UK-based consortium for the construction of Hobyo Port, and President Qoorqoor has voiced appreciation for the United Kingdom’s role in the region’s development. Vice President Eid has also held high‑level discussions with the Turkish ambassador in Dhusamareb, focusing on infrastructure projects such as the port of Hobyo and the rehabilitation of regional airports. Those talks underlined the region’s commitment to attracting foreign investment and highlighted recent security gains that have created a more stable environment.
On the domestic front, the vice president has been active in governance and humanitarian affairs. He has chaired conferences on good governance in Dhusamareb, launched a catch‑up vaccination campaign for children under five, and inaugurated the Somali Humanitarian Forum, which brought together government representatives, scholarship providers, and aid organisations to address food insecurity, healthcare and disaster response. Federal President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has also played a mediation role, reconciling Vice President Eid with Galmudug President Ahmed Abdi Karie Qoorqoor after an earlier public dispute, helping to restore unity within the regional leadership.
While the search for more detailed coverage of the London community office opening continues, the vice president’s European tour reflects the federal government’s broader strategy to keep the diaspora engaged in national recovery and long‑term development. Other Somali officials, including the Deputy Minister of Information, have also held strategic talks with the diaspora in London, reinforcing the importance of sustained engagement with Somalis abroad.
