Gorgor Commandos Launch Security Operations in Jowhar

JOWHAR — The Somali National Army (SNA) has intensified its security operations in Jowhar, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and counter threats posed by extremist elements in the Middle Shabelle region.

Units from the 18th Brigade of the elite Gorgor Commandos, led by Colonel Aden Mohamed Farah, carried out coordinated and planned operations across key areas of the town. The operation focused on maintaining stability and preventing activities linked to Kharijite elements that could endanger the community.

Comprehensive Security Sweep

During the operation, troops conducted thorough searches of strategic locations, including major neighborhoods, public areas, and key access routes into and out of Jowhar. The measures were aimed at disrupting potential threats and reinforcing the security presence across the city.

The Gorgor Commandos have been actively conducting clearance operations across the Middle Shabelle region as part of broader efforts to eliminate militant networks. The 171st Unit of the 17th Brigade, operating under the elite 1st Gorgor Commando Division, recently conducted highly coordinated clearance operations in Masaale, located in southern Middle Shabelle. These targeted ground operations aim to systematically dismantle militant groups that actively use the region’s dense terrain as a staging ground for their activities.

Commander Urges Public Cooperation

Speaking during the operation, Colonel Aden Mohamed Farah, alongside other military officers, called on residents to cooperate closely with security forces, emphasizing the importance of public collaboration in maintaining peace and preventing security disruptions.

The Gorgor Commandos have increasingly taken on dual responsibilities, transitioning between high-intensity combat operations and complex civilian support logistics. In April 2026, the 195th Company of the 19th Gorgor Commando Battalion delivered urgently needed food assistance to drought-affected communities in Raaga Celle district in the Middle Shabelle region, demonstrating the army’s continued role not only in safeguarding national security but also in responding to humanitarian needs across the country.

Mine Clearance Operations

The security operations in Jowhar coincide with broader efforts to clear explosive hazards from key transit routes in the region. In April 2026, the specialized Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit of the Somali National Army successfully located and safely removed an active improvised explosive device (IED) in the Gololey area on the outskirts of Balcad town within the Middle Shabelle region. The concealed explosive posed a severe and immediate threat to both local civilian residents and commercial vehicles utilizing the vital route.

Strategic Importance of the Jowhar-Balcad Corridor

The current operation focuses on securing the Jowhar-Balcad corridor, a vital road that has remained under significant Al-Shabaab influence for years. Despite Balcad sitting just 30 kilometers from Mogadishu and Jowhar approximately 90 kilometers north, large portions of the road remain effectively controlled by the militant group, which reportedly collects taxes along the route and decides which trucks are permitted to proceed to Jowhar, the administrative capital of Hirshabelle State.

Previous Clearance Operations in Middle Shabelle

The Jowhar operation follows similar successful missions by Gorgor Commandos in the region. In January 2026, the elite Gorgor Commando Force executed clearance operations in the rural areas north of Jabad-Godane in the Middle Shabelle region, where government forces recovered a cache of weapons and ammunition reportedly abandoned by Al-Shabaab militants as they fled the advancing troops. Commander of the SNA’s 171st Battalion, Abdullahi Mustafa Ali (known as “Timaha-Weyne”), confirmed that security operations are continuing in the area.

Commitment to Lasting Stability

Authorities confirmed that further operations are in preparation as components of an extensive strategy designed to bolster security measures and guarantee lasting stability throughout the area. Officials confirmed that additional planned operations are underway as part of a broader strategy to further strengthen security and ensure sustained stability in the region.

The Somali National Army continues to play a central role in safeguarding communities and advancing efforts to eliminate threats to national security. By effectively dismantling temporary bases and advancing deep into contested areas, the Gorgor forces actively prevent militants from securing the space and resources needed to plan complex attacks against civilian or government targets.

The Ministry of Defense has indicated that high-intensity operations will continue without pause. The military intends to aggressively maintain these tactical maneuvers until militant elements are entirely removed from the Middle Shabelle region, aligning with the Federal Government’s broader nationwide stabilization efforts to reclaim rural territories and ensure that secured areas remain safe while establishing permanent, recognized state authority.
