Voter Card Collection Launches in Newly Liberated Xarardheere District

XARARDHEERE – The National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC) has officially launched the collection of voter cards for the one-person, one-vote electoral process in the Xarardheere district of the Mudug region, marking an important step in Somalia’s democratic transition.

The launch ceremony was initiated by the Xarardheere District Commissioner, Caseyr Ibrahim, and officially opened by the Galmudug State Elections Director, Mahad Hassan Warsame. The event signals the beginning of voter card distribution in a district that was recently liberated from Al-Shabaab control after years of militant occupation.

The NIEBC has launched national voter registration across numerous remote and regional areas, demonstrating the federal government’s operational reach and its ability to implement sophisticated civic mandates across the country. The commission has deployed registration teams to districts ranging from the coastal town of Hobyo to Qansaxdheere in the Bay region.

Xarardheere’s Liberation and Electoral Progress

Xarardheere was one of several districts that had been under Al-Shabaab control for an extended period before being liberated by Somali security forces. The district’s inclusion in the voter card distribution process reflects the government’s commitment to extending democratic participation to all regions, including those recently recovered from militant control.

Residents in neighbouring districts have welcomed the ongoing voter registration process, with communities in Abudwaq expressing support for the exercise as a key step toward allowing citizens to shape their political future and elect representatives who represent community interests.

One-Person, One-Vote Electoral Framework

The voter card collection in Xarardheere is part of the broader one-person, one-vote electoral framework that the Federal Government is implementing across Somalia. The system aims to allow citizens to directly elect their representatives, moving away from the indirect clan-based electoral model that has been in place for decades.

The NIEBC has previously announced that 923,220 people were registered to vote in the Banadir region, marking a major milestone in the country’s ongoing electoral process. The release of the voter list reflects months of rigorous preparation and cooperation between national and local institutions.

The NIEBC has also begun distributing voting cards to residents of the Banadir region, ensuring that eligible voters can participate seamlessly in the electoral process. Local residents have expressed anticipation, viewing the rollout as a tangible sign of Somalia’s commitment to strengthening democratic processes.

Way Forward

The launch of voter card collection in Xarardheere represents a significant milestone in Somalia’s democratic transition, particularly in areas that have been inaccessible due to conflict. As the NIEBC continues its work across the country, the successful distribution of voter cards will be crucial for the credibility and inclusivity of the upcoming elections.
